Manager Guide: AI Notes Summarization
If you’ve ever spent an afternoon reading through months of notes before you could write a single review comment, this one’s for you. AI Notes Summarization reads all the notes collected for a competency and turns them into a clear, concise summary — so you can get to writing faster.

What It Does
When you open the Notes panel for a competency or goal during a manager review, you’ll now see a “Summarize” button at the top. Click it, and Perform will read through all the notes attached to that competency — from peers, the employee, and any other contributors — and generate a short paragraph highlighting the key themes.
Think of it as a head start. Instead of reading 10 individual notes before you can write, you get a summary that pulls it all together, and you take it from there.

A few things worth knowing
- It’s a drafting aid, not a decision. The summary is there to save you time, not to replace your judgment. Always review what it generates and add your own perspective before submitting.
- Each competency has its own summary. Open the Notes panel for each competency separately — summaries are generated one at a time.
- More notes = better summaries. If the notes for a competency are sparse or very brief, the summary may be limited. That’s a good signal to gather more input before review time.
- You can give feedback on quality. A thumbs up / thumbs down option appears below each summary. Your feedback helps us improve the feature over time.
💬 AI-generated content is intended as a drafting aid. Always review the output before using it in your review.
Note Summary
Each competency (such as "Communication" or "Analytical Thinking") has a Notes section showing all notes logged for that employee. You can use the Summarize button to generate a summary of all notes for that competency.

The default view — click Summarize in the top right corner of the Notes section.
How to Use
- Open a review in progress and navigate to the competency or goal you want to work on.
- Open the notes panel.
- Click “Summarize” at the top of the panel.
- Read through the summary — it usually appears within a few seconds.
- Use it as inspiration when writing your review comments. Copy any part of it directly into the comments field if that helps.
You’ll need 20 words written in notes on the competency or goal for the button to appear. The more notes there are, the more useful the summary tends to be.

The summary appears with a reference to the competency, along with options to like, dislike, copy, or retry.
What you can do with the summary
- Like / Dislike — Give feedback on the quality of the summary
- Copy — Copy the summary text to paste into a comment field
- Retry — Refresh and generate a new summary
FAQ
Can I edit the summary?
The summary itself isn’t editable, but you can copy any part of it and paste it into your comments field to edit freely from there.
Will employees see the summary I generated?
No. Summaries are only visible to you during your session. They’re not saved to the employee record and aren’t shared with anyone else.
Is employee data being used to train AI models?
No. Notes and review content are used only to generate your summary in the moment and are not used to train external AI models.
The button isn’t showing up — what should I check?
First, make sure there’s at least one note on that competency. If notes are present and the button still isn’t there, check with your HR administrator to confirm that AI features are enabled for your organization.
Need a hand?
